Sakai has flourished as an open port since ancient times, as well as developing as a base for the fishing industry. This is clear from the "Grand Evening Fish Market" that is said to be continuing since the Kamakura period.
There are currently two fishing ports in Sakai, Sakai (Dejima) fishing port and Ishizu fishing port, with four fishing cooperates (total of around 150 members) conducting typical coastal fishing for inner-bay varieties of fish and shellfish, including whitebait, pacific sand eels, Japanese sea bass, righteye flounders, hairtail, conger eel and shrimp.
There is also the "Tore-Tore Ichiba" that is held here every Saturday and Sunday, providing fun for all the family that includes retail of fresh fish, BBQs, some of the famous octopus rice, and broiled tuna heads.
