Sakai Harbor flourished as a foreign trade port during the middle ages, but with the replacement of the Yamato River it fell into decline. Old Sakai Harbor was therefore created and repaired by such individuals as Edo Merchant Hyoemon Yoshikawa. The old Sakai Lighthouse and Princess Otohime Statue in the vicinity serve to create something of a promenade for water-lovers.
Located close to Sakai Station, there are also lodging facilities such as hotels and commercial facilities in front of the station.
